Tuesday the 18th of July dawned hot and bright in Toronto, and was the first nice day in a week of clouds and intermittent rain showers. On this second day of our Experience Week the delegates were put into direct competition (in the friendliest way possible) at a luxury fitness club in the heart of the city.
Mayfair Clubs health and fitness gyms in Toronto are recognized as being among the best in the city and set a high standard for the nation. They are especially well known for their tennis courts and saltwater swimming pools.
As soon as we arrived that morning we were met by three of Mayfair Clubs best fitness instructors wearing blue uniform shirts complete with clipboards, whistles and stopwatches. That’s when we knew this wasn’t going to be an easy day – they looked intense. Led by Daryl Jinks, (the Personal Training Manager at Mayfair Clubs Lakeshore facility) the health and fitness professionals were eager to implement a training regime that they designed especially for our Fitness Day challenge.
The regular gym members looked pretty shocked when we rolled in, and many folks grabbed their cameras and started taking pictures of the delegates of course (that happens everywhere we go). But here at Mayfair Clubs, on that morning we were just fifty-seven ‘competitors aged 19 to 25, wearing exercise clothes and matching ball caps’; beauty and grace was to be completely removed from the equation!
Together all three men were making ready to host a ‘World’ class fitness event.
Mayfair Clubs regular gym members must have wondered what the heck was happening when half the breakfast Bistro was suddenly sectioned off and the Mayfair Clubs photo wall ‘wrap’ was unpacked and assembled amidst a flurry of flash photography… just who were these important young people?

To comply with the terms of our international license agreement, our ‘World’ pageant must test the fitness of all entrants and add those value to our scoring formula on Saturday night.
The 2017 Search for Miss World Canada fitness test was comprised of three exercises,
These three fitness tests were very physically strenuous, and were designed to test the assembly and find the best athletes in under three hours.
Three Exercises Pushed The Ladies to Their Limits
Mayfair Clubs Fitness Instructors devised a simple plan to measure the strongest contenders by computing scores from three simple exercises.
Max Pushup Test: This activity was just as it sounds; led by Kerry on the green AstroTurf of the golf ‘driving range’ the test measures the maximum amount of push-ups each young lady could perform continuously in an unlimited amount of time.
Weight Assisted Pull-up Test: At one of the exercise machines in the main gym, Daryl himself helped each of the contestants pull themselves up and down and then recorded how many times they could do it. This station was the slowest as the ladies tried their very hardest to get the biggest totals. You can see by the expression on this young lady’s face that it was all she could do to get the last pull-up. And what’s even more interesting is Daryl Jink’s face; you can see this instructor really cares, and he’s trying his very best too!Sled Push for 40 yards, measured over time was probably the most dynamic activity in the mix and made for some great pictures.
Participants had to turn the sled around at the twenty yard mark and push it all the way back again to make forty yards total.
This was tough stuff and there were a few ladies who went a little too far and had to take a few moments to recover. That’s when friendship was felt the most, and when it was most appreciated. Although each of these young woman are, strictly speaking in direct competition with one another, they were cheering one another on, and encouraging each delegate to do her best at each of the testing stations.
Then it was time to hit the pool for the #SaltwaterSelfie.

Famous for their saltwater swimming pools in the heart of Toronto, Mayfair Clubs Lakeshore asked KPDI Digital Strategy Agency to create a unique social media ‘shareable moment’ challenge. After scouting the area, the marketing company team invited Toronto cameraman named David Suddaby to help rig an underwater camera and therein make a frame to capture the young women swimming with their silver crowns atop their heads.
Working with this acclaimed cinematographer, the agency selected the area of the pool illuminated by an oval shaft of sunlight created by the circular window at the back of the building. It worked perfectly. The pool also became a place for some much needed relaxation after the physical testing.
Raymi Lauren, the KPDI agency appointee was the perfect person to take point at this aquatic attraction. She is also a blogger, Raymi The Minx and she came out a few times during 2017 MWC Experience Week on behalf of sponsors. On this day she also gave some helpful tips on how to look good for the camera underwater as she recorded every delegates’ name for the plastic slate.
Her com-padre Alec Glover, also a KPDI employee, used the slate to track each entrant and send them their footage later in the day.. Eighteen of the forty entrants published their pieces, and five micro-fiber Snappy Towels.
Perfect for the beach or around the home, in their choice of five colours each towel is equipped with twelve handy stainless-steel snaps which makes them remarkably versatile – they can be worn as a cape, a sarong, or folded up in a certain way to resemble a backpack or satchel.

Another one … who is this?
Healthy Lunch at the Mayfair Clubs Lakeshore Bistro
In between the Fitness Day testing and SaltwaterSelfie attraction in the swimming pool area, the delegates ate a healthy lunch.at the bistro.
With an eye toward accommodating all appetites and any dietary restrictions including food allergies and vegetarian preferences; the staff selected meat filled and vegetarian and vegan pita wraps in every possible flavour and composition. This sandwich staple was served alongside fruit cups and fresh sliced watermelons, cantaloupe and honeydew melon and other fruits and vegetables. Four giant salad bowls filled with leafy green garden salads were constantly being refilled in the two-hour long lunch period.
And then it was over. We all returned to the bus exhausted but super happy about how we spent our time together, and each and everyone one of us felt a giant sense of accomplishment. Thank you Mayfair Clubs and congratulations Michaela Smith, Miss Nanaimo 2017 for winning Fitness Day.
